On the 21st anniversary of 9/11, West Linn community members will honor the thousands of civilians and first responders who lost their lives during the attacks, as well as those who continue to serve the community today.
This year’s Honoring Those Who Serve ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 at Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue Station 58 off of Failing Street and Highway 43.
West Linn resident Dean Suhr has organized the ceremony for the past dozen years to ensure the West Linn community won’t forget the tragedy.
In addition to honoring those who died on 9/11, Suhr said this year’s event would also recognize the two firefighters who died battling wildfires in Oregon this summer, Logan Taylor of Medford and Colin Hagan of Michigan.
Suhr said this year’s ceremony will be slightly scaled back from last year’s commemoration marking the 20th anniversary of the attacks.
The event will include the opportunity for residents to create bouquets and cards for police officers and firefighters serving West Linn today.
After the ceremony, Suhr and any community members wishing to join will bring the flowers and cards to the West Linn police station and TVF&R stations 55 and 59.
Suhr asked attendees to bring flowers to contribute to the bouquet and for children to bring cards.
Suhr also runs West Linn’s Yellow Ribbon Project, in which he and other community members tie 3,000 yellow ribbons to the West A Street bridge over I-205 to honor the 3,000 lives lost on 9/11. He’ll hang the commemorative banner and ribbons on the bridge Sept. 5, leaving them up for a week leading to Sept. 11. He encouraged people to stop by the bridge, hang a yellow ribbon and pause for reflection.
“The Yellow Ribbon Project is a great way for parents to share about 9/11 with their children,” Suhr said.
